The people allowed into Hong Kong are almost certainly not rural folk. I'm pretty sure China strictly controls this with their hukou system. Urban mainlanders are very unsophisticated.

Hong Kong is the Asian New York, with all the good and bad things that entails. But they are also declining in relative importance every day. They need the money the mainland nouveau riche pour into their economy every day.

Macau is a lot more philosophical about it.

I would say its because the industrial might of China is located on the mainland, as are the people who control it. That's where the money is, and mainland Chinese come to Hong Kong to spend it on luxury goods, or to Macau to dump it in the casinos. Hong Kong was so much more prominent and important 20 or 30 years ago, and its hard for the locals to let it go. Still a great city though.

The Yuan is still artificially low, but its slight increase in the last few years is really starting to tell on Chinese exports. Re: electronics manufacture they are glad the Yen and Won have also kept pace.

The market, the guys in London and Frankfurt, do not care whether high or low Yes is good for Japan

what they care (to make profit), is, (key in defining currency values) the "capital flow" .. whether capital leaving or entering Japan .. demand for Yen

Weakening Yen means capital leaving Japan .. that means Japan now less and less attractive for capital

and

question is

why capital leaving Japan .. why Japan not anymore attractive for capital ?

many reason for that

You are far giving too much weight to recent short term fluctuations:

Image

The JPY is at near historical highs relative to the US dollar.
The last time the JPY was so strong was during the J-Bubble Economy
back when Western pundits were falling over each other in their rush to proclaim Japan as the next great number one [economic] superpower.

Mistaking what one would like or hope to happen with what is is rarely, if ever, informative and/or profitable.

Why China’s Political Model Is Superior

Very interesting NYT article

America and China view their political systems in fundamentally different ways : whereas America sees democratic government as an end in itself, China sees its current form of government, or any political system for that matter, merely as a means to achieving larger national ends.

I can recall, back in the late 1980's, when the NYT and the Atlantic had no lack of featured pundits explaining to their readers the innate superiority of the Japanese Way.

It's déjà vu . . . all over again.

_____

While there are great differences in the details, Japan, Taiwan, S Korea, and China all started with the following on the road to becoming a modern industrial state:

starting out from a low point in national history,

a young workforce,

a very low cost of labour,

a competitive currency,

a emphasis on education - esp science and engineering,

a willingness to take on and complete large projects,

a historical culture of trade and commerce,

a historical culture of manufacturing,

national goals,

Japan, or Korea, or Taiwan of today not where they today due to what's said above

Because of Cold War, Russia and China next door, America orchestrated a push for prosperity in that space

massive American capital, absolute opening of American/western market to imports from that space, military umbrella and and and

If not, if no China and Russia and no Cold war, that space would be even behind India now

Zero civilization and culture

that is why, since no cold war anymore, Japan downhill since .. no competitive advantage anymore

Azari has a point. The East Asian "Tigers" would have been more like pussycats if they had not been allowed to export freely while restricting any imports they felt like restricting. Free trade for those countries was only one way.

The EU and US do not have restrictions on trade?

General Motors Co. earned $7.6 billion last year [2011], the highest profit in company history.
North American money machine: On its home turf, GM earned $7.2 billion before taxes last year. North American sales rose 11 percent because of newer models like the Chevrolet Cruze compact.

Asia strength. GM's International Operations, which include China and the rest of Asia, made a pretax profit of $1.9 billion. While down 16 percent from 2010, it's still strong. Sales in the region grew 7 percent.
The iPhone is everywhere in Japan. The Windows OS is on most computers. ANA recently took delivery of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Japan's record trade deficit highlights weakening Chinese demand

.
Chinese data shows sharp falls in imports from its main trading partners in January, . .

Japan has also been hit by declining demand elsewhere. Its trade surplus with the European Union shrank to its smallest ever, at just 689 million yen, as exports dipped 7.7 percent.

And as Asia's exports to Europe slumped due to the economic turmoil, so did Japan's exports of semiconductors and plastics to the rest of Asia, the MOF official said.

Japan's total trade deficit for January was 1.475 trillion yen, bigger than the median forecast of 1.468 trillion yen in a Reuters poll and more than 50 percent larger than the previous record of a 967.9 billion yen deficit in January 2009, in the wake of the global financial crisis.
