Romero, Mateo ("Maestro Capitán")

(b. ? ; d. Madrid, 10 May 1647)

Spanish composer (?) of Flemish origin. It is uncertain whether he was born in Flanders or a Spaniard of Flemish descent (his name is said to have been originally Rosmarin). He jointed the royal chapel in Madrid in 1594 as cantor, becoming maestro in 1598. There were at that time two choirs, the Spanish and the Flemish, Capilla española and Capilla flamenca. Romero belong to the latter and was a pupil of Philip of Rogier. ...

In 1633 he retired on a pension, being succeeded in the choirmaster's post by Patiño, while in 1638 he was sent, rather against his will, on a musical mission to the Duke of Braganza in Portugal,. The duke, on his accession to the throne of Portugal in 1640, rewarded him with the title of Capellán cantor de la Corona, and mentioned him (after his death) in his 'Defence of Modern Music' published in 1649.
