Obviously there are physical limits. The major problem is not that human reaction time is too slow, but that people do not put enough pressure on the brakes until it is too late. Computer control of brake pressure, the antilock brakes, AWD and optical measurement of closing distance results in harder braking more quickly.Typhoon wrote:Looks like a good call. The Eyesight technology is interesting.

Certainly. However, I was referring in general to that subclass of idiots who tailgate at highway speeds, even in poor weather, so close that no technology will save them from the finality of physics with regards to kinetic energy and deceleration.Nonc Hilaire wrote:Obviously there are physical limits. I understand. Part of the system is that you can target the car ahead of you while on cruise control and the cc will automatically adjust the speed so as to keep the separation constant. Sounds nice for long trips.Typhoon wrote:Certainly. He also warned that self-driving cars will make ethical decisions that could kill the owner.
“My automated car is confronted by an 80,000 pound truck in my lane,” he said hypothetically. “Now the car has to decide whether to run into this truck and kill me, the driver, or to go up on the sidewalk and kill 15 pedestrians.”
