Bought the Subaru Legacy with Eyesight.
This is the current technology leading towards the self-driving car.

The Eyesight technology is interesting.
Although not will save one from the physics of tailgating.

this reminded me that the new fangled techs havent helped the bikes muchAlthough not will save one from the physics of tailgating.
thrillseeking humans push to their limit of comfort, which happens to be just before the point of danger, so all that happened was the gaps closed up and the danger levels remained the same.

Obviously there are physical limits. The major problem is not that human reaction time is too slow, but that people do not put enough pressure on the brakes until it is too late. Computer control of brake pressure, the antilock brakes, AWD and optical measurement of closing distance results in harder braking more quickly.Typhoon wrote:Looks like a good call. Certainly. However, I was referring in general to that subclass of idiots who tailgate at highway speeds, even in poor weather, so close that no technology will save them from the finality of physics with regards to kinetic energy and deceleration.Nonc Hilaire wrote:Obviously there are physical limits. I understand. Part of the system is that you can target the car ahead of you while on cruise control and the cc will automatically adjust the speed so as to keep the separation constant. Sounds nice for long trips.Typhoon wrote:Certainly. Fully Autonomous Cars Unlikely, Says NTSB Chief
Eliminating drivers only shifts human error to programmers, he revealed
Kit Daniels - September 3, 2016
He also warned that self-driving cars will make ethical decisions that could kill the owner.
“My automated car is confronted by an 80,000 pound truck in my lane,” he said hypothetically. “Now the car has to decide whether to run into this truck and kill me, the driver, or to go up on the sidewalk and kill 15 pedestrians.”
"I fancied myself as some kind of god....It is a sort of disease when you consider yourself some kind of god, the creator of everything, but I feel comfortable about it now since I began to live it out.” -- George Soros
Re: Transport: Planes, Trains, Boats, and Autos
the NTSB chief reveals himself to be a bit of a cluess luddite.
the aeronautics and space industries might be able to bring him up to speed on the various tradeoffs between programmers errors being made once and then fixed permanently versus an endless stream of random idiots.
