When I saw his, "They didn't legalize gay marriage, they outlawed Christianity.", remark I wanted to let it go, but it's possibly simultaneously the most hateful and silly thing I have ever seen him post. The gay marriage ruling doesn't impact Christianity AT ALL. There is nowhere in the gospels that it says ********** or Jim DeMint should be able to tell people what to do in their own homes, not a single place, especially in the New Testament. The Old Testament supports his right to impale adulterers, but the New Testament, particularly the gospels are silent on the right of ******* to enslave others.
This mentality that if you don't get to micromanage other people's lives you are somehow being oppressed is truly bizarre. Especially in the bizarro world where they consider themselves the champions of liberty. Anyone who opposes gay marriage is in opposition to liberty.
Gay marriage doesn't impact straight marriage in ANY WAY, it doesn't impact the Christian's right to free religion in ANY WAY. And yet people somehow think the removal of their privilege to define words for other people is somehow an assault of their freedoms.
It's totally bizarre.

Theologically, if Jesus is who he says he is, if he G_D's messenger let alone G_D's son .. if so .. then homosexuality is a sin
In that sense, whoever said " They didn't legalize gay marriage, they outlawed Christianity " has a valid case
Look, this whole "gay rubbish" is a political farce .. In India and Afghanistan and Pakistan homos marry other homos for 1000s of yrs, and their societies accept it by looking the other way
Notion, homosexuality a sexual "preference" same rubbish as gay marriage and gay bishops and and and

Let's keep in mind Tinker enthusiastically campaigned for and voted for a gay hating bigot in 2008. Hatred for me and not for thee.
And Christianity is well on it's way to being outlawed, any Church that refuses to marry a gay will be dissolved. All going according to plan.
People that made up the words get to define the words, yes Tinker.

I'm certain this will be the argument going forward. Like I said, just a matter of time. It's not going to end the way you think though. Just a warning. If you want specific warnings about your fate I would recommend, Isaiah, Daniel, Ezekiel, Matthew, Revelations, and so forth.Enki wrote:Then Christianity was outlawed by the first amendment.Heracleum Persicum wrote:Enki wrote:.

America IS NOT a deeply Christian country. Santa is worshipped by more people than Christ. What people call Christianity has very little relationship to what Christ taught. The same people who say that they want the government to reflect Christian values have no problem with the inconsistent opposition to giving money to the poor. We have child pornography on billboards. This country is not very Christian at all.Heracleum Persicum wrote: You know as I know, America is a DEEPLY "Christian" country .. in fact, can be (rightly) argued, THE ONLY (really) Christian country in the world, most Americans still believe in Santa and world was made in 7 days

Americans have no problem giving money to the poor. What we have a problem with is gov't taxing away 40% of GDP fedstatelocal in the name of the poor and 2-3% going to the poor.

Evangelicalism in America is like Catholicism in France prior to WW1, or Orthodoxy in Tzarist Russia. Its a patriotic identifier, a tool of nationalism. Its not about authentic religious sentiment, and we've had numerous threads dissecting what passes for "Christian" conservatism in the US. More often than not its just a tool to beat on some out-group with. Hate the gays, jail the blacks, kill the Muslims, shut up the women, etc. Its ostensibly Christian but it might as well be Stalinism or any other repressive ideology. Its not what Christianity really is, its just a cover for the uglier side of American conservatism.Enki wrote:America IS NOT a deeply Christian country. The US is nothing if not polarized.
On the other hand, anecdotally, I've worked with fundamentalist Christians [FCs] and also dated one.
All were great people.
A work colleague received a great deal of grief for refusing to work on Sunday. In retrospect, I think that was unfair. My overwhelmingly atheist colleagues were, in retrospect, quite intolerant.
In the case of dating a FC, I was upfront about my sinful ways, less than zero contrition for the same, and disbelief in the supernatural. It was interesting and instructive that it didn't prevent us from dating.
Anyways, these issues of gay marriage, abortion, Zimmerman, Islamophobia, etc do a good job of distracting the public from the real issues and problems facing the US.
Carry on.

Re: The Gay Marriage Issue
I was referring to conservative Evangelical Christians in the US, which is a subset of a subset in one country. Certainly there are Evangelicals in the US who aren't conservative, and all of Evangelicalism is a minority of Christians as a whole, so I am generalizing about a very small group.Typhoon wrote:That is the impression one gets from the media.Ibrahim wrote:Evangelicalism in America is like Catholicism in France prior to WW1, or Orthodoxy in Tzarist Russia. I agree that the Zimmerman trial is a distraction, but gay marriage and anti-Muslim discrimination are real issues that raise question of freedom and equality, and abortion is a literal life or death issue. I would hesitate to call them the distractions compared to broader economic trends about which little can be done anyway.

This is the problem with these fundie Christian Republicans. They cannot distinguish between themselves and Jesus. They claim they want smaller government, but they want the government in your bedroom. They claim that they want the government to be more Christian but they oppose it caring for the poor. Jesus said a whole lot about caring for the poor. He didn't mention homosexuality even once.Typhoon wrote: However, the govt should not perceive itself to be Jesus's enforcers and try do the same via legislation and surveillance.

Re: The Gay Marriage Issue
Like I said, religion is just a cover for them to say whatever they want about things/people they hate, and do whatever they want in the interest of their own comfort. "I hate fags, so I assume Jesus also hated fags. I support the torture and murder of random browns, so I figure Jesus would be ok with that. I want to sit in my suburban home and just pile up consumer products and stuff my face with processed food while gates keep the poors and blacks out of my line of sight, and that's Jesus rewarding me for being such a good Christian."Enki wrote:This is the problem with these fundie Christian Republicans.
