A Lockheed Martin fiber-optic laser burned a hole through the engine of a running truck and stopped it in its tracks during a field test on March 3, demonstrating the highest power ever documented from a laser of its type.
The ATHENA, or Advanced Test High Energy Asset, is a prototype ground-mounted laser based on the Area Defense Anti-Munitions (ADAM) laser weapon system. ATHENA also incorporates ALADIN, the 30-kilowatt Accelerated Laser Demonstration Initiative fiber laser.
ATHENA burned through the engine manifold of the running vehicle from more than a mile away.
This was the first field test for ATHENA. It uses spectral beam combining to form a beam from multiple fiber laser modules, which are more efficient and more lethal than the multiple individual 10-kilowatt lasers used in other systems, Lockheed Marin said.
