The Egyptian foreign minister has announced that a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in and around the Gaza Strip will come into effect at 19:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Mohamed Kamel Amr thanked all parties involved in brokering the truce as he made the announcement in a joint news conference with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

Under the ceasefire terms, Israel is to stop all aggression against the Gaza Strip from land, sea and air, including cross-border incursions and targeted killings.

Palestinian factions are to cease all aggression from Gaza towards Israel, including rocket fire and attacks on the border.
So the rumors were true and Yahu backed down on the ground invasion. Word is Morsi was a big player in this, probably by threatening to cut off supplies to Gaza when talking to Hamas, and threatening ramp them up when talking to Israel.
A good negotiator if that is what he did.
Typhoon wrote:The whole thing was a waste of time and a PR failure for Israel, and that's before you get into the minor details like dead kids. The only thing it did was make Hamas and Hillary Clinton look good.
As other have pointed out, this makes Morsi look good.

Thank you VERY MUCH for your post, Typhoon.

Seconded.

Wondering if Morsi the Cat
Could be Another Sadat

If so, he will need to guard himself well...........

Morsi May Need 9 Lives ;)

Whether he will end up like Rabin or Begin ;) is the question ;)

Peacemaker can be a Perilous Profession...........
Wonder if Warmonger on the Whole is Safer......

.

Issue, Monster, is, what you mean by PEACE

you mean keeping Status quo

or

you mean change based on Justice and will of people by convincing the beast to give up

If, peace means Status quo, if so, yes, Sadat comes to mind

If, peace means, convincing beast those days are gone .. if so .. YES, sunny days ahead for Morsi

Thank You Very Much for your post, Azari......

Mercy is better than Justice.......

If we Depraved Sinful Chaos Monkey Killer Apes got what we often deserve....... :o

And even Mercy can be Stern & Scary too.........

So Much So that we might well prefer the Status Quo to G_d's Mercy.......

Which Might Mean a Small but Sustainable population Survives in the Southern Hemisphere or Off Planet.....

Woe to They Who Long for the Day of the Lord When He Dispenses His Justice for It Will Be Darkness and Not Light........

Monster,

to get familiar with subject @ hand

please read this NYT article :

What You Don’t Know About Gaza

.

What You Don’t Know About Gaza

NEARLY everything you’ve been led to believe about Gaza is wrong. Below are a few essential points that seem to be missing from the conversation, much of which has taken place in the press, about Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip.

THE GAZANS Most of the people living in Gaza are not there by choice. The majority of the 1.5 million people crammed into the roughly 140 square miles of the Gaza Strip belong to families that came from towns and villages outside Gaza like Ashkelon and Beersheba. They were driven to Gaza by the Israeli Army in 1948.

THE OCCUPATION The Gazans have lived under Israeli occupation since the Six-Day War in 1967. Israel is still widely considered to be an occupying power, even though it removed its troops and settlers from the strip in 2005. Israel still controls access to the area, imports and exports, and the movement of people in and out. Israel has control over Gaza’s air space and sea coast, and its forces enter the area at will. As the occupying power, Israel has the responsibility under the Fourth Geneva Convention to see to the welfare of the civilian population of the Gaza Strip.

THE BLOCKADE Israel’s blockade of the strip, with the support of the United States and the European Union, has grown increasingly stringent since Hamas won the Palestinian Legislative Council elections in January 2006. Fuel, electricity, imports, exports and the movement of people in and out of the Strip have been slowly choked off, leading to life-threatening problems of sanitation, health, water supply and transportation.

The blockade has subjected many to unemployment, penury and malnutrition. This amounts to the collective punishment — with the tacit support of the United States — of a civilian population for exercising its democratic rights.

THE CEASE-FIRE Lifting the blockade, along with a cessation of rocket fire, was one of the key terms of the June cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. This accord led to a reduction in rockets fired from Gaza from hundreds in May and June to a total of less than 20 in the subsequent four months (according to Israeli government figures). The cease-fire broke down when Israeli forces launched major air and ground attacks in early November; six Hamas operatives were reported killed.

WAR CRIMES The targeting of civilians, whether by Hamas or by Israel, is potentially a war crime. Every human life is precious. But the numbers speak for themselves: Nearly 700 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed since the conflict broke out at the end of last year. In contrast, there have been around a dozen Israelis killed, many of them soldiers. Negotiation is a much more effective way to deal with rockets and other forms of violence. This might have been able to happen had Israel fulfilled the terms of the June cease-fire and lifted its blockade of the Gaza Strip.

This war on the people of Gaza isn’t really about rockets. Nor is it about “restoring Israel’s deterrence,” as the Israeli press might have you believe.

.

Well, Monster .. hope you understand now that Gazans want their homes in Ashkelon and Beersheba back

and they will get it back, no matter what

.
Thank You Very Much for your post, Azari........

Thank you for the article but it is dated 2009.....

I am interested whether or not the Gazans and other Palis can leave Gaza permanently if they choose to do so...........

Right Now..........

Often it is best to allow an enemy to retreat...............

IMVHO Israel is unwise if they do not allow Gazans to Get Out and Stay Out........

So again the question........... Can Gazan's leave and not come back...........

Well, Monster .. hope you understand now that Gazans want their homes in Ashkelon and Beersheba back
And the Muslim Moors who invaded Spain and then got kicked out in 1492 want what they consider "their homes" in Spain back...

They even still have the keys!

The rule for Muslims seems to be what they have stolen is theirs forever, but if an infidel takes something from them even if the Muslims stole it from the Infidel, that is an intolerable offense .......

IIRC it is some sort of Muslim rule.........

I am not into this zero sum IrreDental ;) game.......

Let's get out into Space and eventually build Orbitals......More room than all the land mass of this crazy planet.........

In the mean time we may have to settle for colonies on the Moon, Mars and Hollow Asteroid Worlds........

But that's much better than blowing up the Planet over the hurt feelings of the Malignant Muslim Meme Culture about a piece of property smaller than a Persian Pisctacio Plantation.

The Real Enemy of the Jews is a journey through the propaganda lies and truth of history.

.

Almost everything you've been conditioned to believe about the making and sustaining of conflict in and over Palestine that became Israel is not true.

It's not true that all the Palestinians who became refugees in 1948 left their homeland voluntarily. Most were driven out by Zionist terrorism and ethnic cleansing.

It's not true that Israel has lived in constant danger of annihilation, the "driving into the sea" of its Jews. Israel's existence has never, ever, been in danger.

And it's not true that Israel never had Arab partners for peace. It's Zionism that has never been interested in peace on terms the vast majority of Palestinians and most other Arabs and Muslims everywhere could accept.

Zionism: The Real Enemy of the Jews is a journey through the propaganda lies and truth of history.

When the citizens of nations know the difference between Zionism's propaganda lies and the documented facts and truth of history, they will be empowered, if they care, to demand that their governments act to end Israel's oppression of the Palestinians. And that's why Alan Hart devoted more than five years of his life to researching and writing this book - to empower citizens to play their necessary part in stopping the countdown to catastrophe for all.

Zionism: The Real Enemy of the Jews is a complete re-writing of the history of the making and sustaining of the conflict, replacing Zionist mythology with events as they actually happened. The events are given global context to enable all readers to see how all the pieces of the most complex and complicated jig-saw puzzle fit together.

The insight Alan brings to the pages of this book is assisted by revelations from private conversations he had over the years with leaders on both sides of the conflict, including the two greatest opposites in all of human history - Golda Meir, Mother Israel, and Yasser Arafat, Father Palestine.

Written in his down-to-earth, television reporting and conversational style, the book reads more like a novel than a conventional history. It will keep you turning the pages wanting to know more.

It has two central themes.

One is why Western support of Israel right-or-wrong has made the whole Arab and wider Muslim world an explosion of anger and humiliation waiting for its time to happen.

The other is how Israel, the child of Zionism, became its own worst enemy and a threat not only to the peace of the region and the world, but also to the best interests of Jews everywhere and the moral integrity of Judaism itself.

The key to understanding, the author writes, is knowledge of the difference between Judaism and Zionism. He explains: "Judaism is the religion of Jews, not 'the' Jews because not all Jews are religious. Like Christianity and Islam, Judaism has at its core a set of moral values and ethical principles. Zionism is Jewish nationalism in the form of a sectarian, colonial enterprise which, in the process of creating and then expanding in the Arab heartland a state for some Jews, made a mockery of Judaism's moral values and ethical principles and demonstrated contempt for international law and the human and political rights of the Palestinians. That's why, for example, Nazi holocaust survivor Dr. Hajo Meyer titled his latest book An Ethical Tradition Betrayed, The End of Judaism."

The author adds: "Supporters of Israel right or wrong conflate Judaism and Zionism because the assertion that they are one and the same enables them to claim that criticism of the Zionist state of Israel is a manifestation of anti-Semitism. Often, almost always these days, the accusation that criticism of Israel is anti-Semitism is false. And this false charge is the blackmail card played to silence criticism of, and suppress informed and honest debate about, the Zionist state and its policies. The reality is that Judaism and political Zionism are total opposites, and knowledge of the difference is the key to understanding two things. One is why it is perfectly possible to be passionately anti-Zionist - opposed to Zionism's colonial enterprise - without being in any way, shape or form anti-Semitic (anti-Jew). The other is why it is wrong to blame all Jews everywhere for the crimes of the hard core Zionist few in Palestine that became Israel."

The Lod Airport massacre[1][2][3][4] was a terrorist attack that occurred on May 30, 1972, in which three members of the Japanese Red Army having been recruited by the Palestinian group called the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) [5][6] killed 26 people and injured 80 others at Tel Aviv's Lod airport (now Ben Gurion International Airport).[7] Two of the attackers were killed, while Kōzō Okamoto was captured after being wounded.

The dead comprised seventeen Christian pilgrims from Puerto Rico, a Canadian citizen, and eight Israelis, including Professor Aharon Katzir, an internationally renowned protein biophysicist, whose brother, Ephraim Katzir, was elected President of Israel the following year.

Because airport security was focused on the possibility of a Palestinian attack, the use of Japanese terrorists took the guards by surprise. The attack has often been described as a suicide mission, but it has also been asserted that it was the outcome of a larger operation (the particulars of which remain unpublicized) that went awry.[8] The three perpetrators—Okamoto, Tsuyoshi Okudaira, and Yasuyuki Yasuda—had been trained in Baalbek, Lebanon; the actual planning was handled by Wadie Haddad (a.k.a. Abu Hani), head of PFLP External, with some input from Okamoto.

Recalling the Japanese Red Army Faction who shot up the Lod Airport on behalf of the Palis......

In shocker, Israel's Barak quits politics

http://news.yahoo.com/shocker-israels-b ... 02974.html
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Monday abruptly announced he was quitting politics, injecting new turmoil into the Israeli political system weeks ahead of general elections.

Barak, Israel's most-decorated soldier and one-time prime minister, said he would stay on in his current post until a new government is formed following the Jan. 22 balloting.

His resignation could mean the departure of the most moderating influence on hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who holds a wide lead in polls and is expected to easily win re-election.

NYT - Using War as Cover to Target Journalists

“Targeting journalism has become a trend, and now the people who are harassing and killing journalists include governments as well as the people you would expect,” said Mr. Rusbridger, who, along with others, was honored at the gathering in New York.

On the same day as the Waldorf event, three employees of news organizations were killed in Gaza by Israeli missiles. Rather than suggesting it was a mistake, or denying responsibility, an Israeli Defense Forces spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich, told The Associated Press, “The targets are people who have relevance to terror activity.”

American military killed intentionally many journalist in Iraq .. Wahhabi & Salafi killing many Syrian patriot journalists .. Israel killed many international journalist in Gaza, including PressTv journalist

Now, Roi Tov claims (courtesy of the IDF) 70% failure of Iron Dome.
The cost per Iron Dome unit is US$50 million consisting of launchers and intercepters and the cost per missile launched is around US$40,000 to $100,000 (estimates vary) to intercept Qassam rockets that cost less than $100

On several occasions, I commented on Israel’s manipulation of its antimissile systems interception data; this is the result of the systems being aimed for export, mainly to South Korea and Singapore, but also due to the generous American support of the development process. The manipulation is straightforward; the system is deployed exclusively where it has optimal interception conditions. This leads to what in Measurement Theory is known as a bad sampling of the data, which becomes unrepresentative of the overall population of the studied event. I avoided quoting the numbers appearing in the Hebrew media for this reason.

With their foiled magic, they claim the interception rate is 90%. Yet, in yesterday’s article (Pillar of Cloud ends Unfinished) I provided the complete data (courtesy of the IDF), showing that 700 missiles out of the 1,000 fired by Hamas hit Israel. This amounts to a 70% failure of Iron Dome.

I can imagine an Israeli general jumping on his chair after reading this and beginning a tirade against me. “Iron Dome was not deployed in the sites that were hit!” He shouts to the silent computer screen. “You are a demagogue,” he continues. Yet, he is wrong.

One of the characteristics of antimissile weapons is their being non-symmetric. Building missiles is much cheaper than the antimissile system. A Qassam rocket costs less than $100 while an Iron Dome antimissile is evaluated at $50,000 per unit. Invariably, there would be more missiles than antimissiles. It is an intrinsic characteristic of this type of events and thus must be taken into account in the sampling. Luckily enough, an event including 1,000 missiles can be easily analyzed using the entire event without recurring to statistical sampling techniques. Iron Dome has an operative 70% failure rate. My dear general, Iron Dome is a failure.

Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Palestinian rocket and mortar attacks on Israel from the Gaza Strip have occurred since 2001. Between 2001 and January 2009, over 8,600 rockets had been launched, leading to 28 deaths and several hundred injuries,[1][2] as well as widespread psychological trauma and disruption of daily life.[3] According to research done by the Social work department at the Sapir Academic college, an estimated 15,000[4] people from Sderot suffer from PTSD and an estimated 1,000 are undergoing treatment.[5]

The weapons, often generically referred to as Qassams, were initially crude and short-range, mainly affecting the Israeli city of Sderot and other communities bordering the Gaza Strip. However, in 2006 more sophisticated rockets began to be deployed, reaching the larger coastal city of Ashkelon, and by early 2009 major cities Ashdod and Beersheba had been hit by Katyusha, WS-1B[6] and Grad rockets, and in 2011-2012 to the cities of Kiryat Gat,Gedera and Ramat Negev.[7] In 2012, Israel's capital Jerusalem and commercial center Tel Aviv were targeted with locally made "M-75" and Iranian Fajr-5 rockets respectively.[8] A few projectiles have contained white phosphorus.[9][9][10][10][11][12][13][14][15]

Attacks have been carried out by all Palestinian armed groups,[16] and, prior to the 2008–2009 Gaza War, were consistently supported by most Palestinians,[17][18][19][20] although the stated goals have been mixed. The attacks, widely condemned for targeting civilians, have been described as terrorism by United Nations, European Union and Israeli officials, and are defined as war crimes by human rights groups Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

Defenses constructed specifically to deal with the weapons include fortifications for schools and bus stops as well as an alarm system named Red Color. Iron Dome, a system to intercept short-range rockets, was developed by Israel and first deployed in the spring of 2011 to protect Beersheba and Ashkelon, but officials and experts warned that it would not be completely effective. Shortly thereafter, it intercepted a Palestinian Grad rocket for the first time.[21]

Israel has responded to the attacks with several military operations in the Gaza Strip, among them Operation Rainbow (May 2004), Operation Days of Penitence (2004), the 2006 Israel-Gaza conflict, Operation Autumn Clouds (2006), Operation Hot Winter (2008),Operation Cast Lead (2009), and Operation Pillar of Defense (2012).

CAIRO - One of the Israeli military's most visible spokesmen is under fire for a photo he posted on his Facebook page captioned "Obama style" in which his face is smeared with mud.

Sacha Dratwa posted the photo in late September, but since the furor he has restricted access to his account. A screengrab of the original post circulating online showed that it drew mixed reactions, with one commenter saying, "You know this is racist, yeah?"

In the photo, Dratwa appears to be smeared in mud from the Dead Sea, a popular activity for many visiting and living in Israel. Dratwa responded to a user on Twitter accusing him of racism saying, "I'm not a racist, please stop [spreading] lies about me." He also posted a response on Facebook saying the firestorm around the photo misrepresents his opinions and is a "cynical use of the information" on his profile.

"I am, and have always been, completely candid about my beliefs and have nothing to hide," wrote Dratwa on Sunday. "The aforementioned photos do not reflect my beliefs and have no bearing whatsoever on my position in the IDF."

OOOOOKAY.... SO how many Palestinians would have died if Iron Dome had not worked and Israel invaded Gaza?

Extra Credit: How many Palestinians would not have died had Hamas not been shooting 8600 Missiles Israel?

My eyes are rolling so much that I may have to get surgery to stop them.

Or is it simply about REVENGE?

Judging from last time's numbers, probably around 1300. Mostly women and children but no doubt because the Palestinians have no regard for human life and hide behind civilians.

For sure still more than what those 8600 rockets (who counted them BTW?) killed.

the takeaway point in all this for those of us far removed is that the extremists with existential fears on either side are absolutely correct.

which does make azari's gloating about the arms race escalating somewhat disturbing.. im not sure turning the entire region into molten glass and pink mist is something to be looking forward to.
