And in the National League the LA Dodgers remain one game away as the series moves back to LA.
I'd like the Mets to force a game seven but it's looking close to the first Yankees-Dodgers World Series in 43 years.

Is Baseball Really Going to Implement the Stupidest Rule in the History of Sports?

It's called the “Golden At-Bat.” You might think this means giving up unto others the hits that they give up unto you, but it is actually the idea of allowing each team the chance to bring up to bat anyone it wants at any point in the game.
This can only happen once per team in each game, but it could mean that a team’s big hitter, someone on the order of Shohei Ohtani or Aaron Judge, could come up to bat, hit a home run, and then, in a crucial situation, be called back to the plate immediately to be the next hitter. Or maybe, if you know that a particular hitter hits a given pitcher as if it were batting practice but he won’t be coming to bat this inning, you can bring him in for a Golden At-Bat to try to spark a rally.

Re: Baseball
I've avoided baseball after that embarrassing showing from the Yankees in the World Series.
That proposal has certainly gotten people's dander up much as the Manfred Man rule has (a runner automatically starts on 2nd in extra innings).
There is a lot of resignation that the people who are stewards of the sport don't like it very much; and that goes for most of the media too, you only like to talk baseball when controversy or condemnations can be had.
Both groups have a death wish of sorts. No one major American sport talks itself down as much as the MLB does. Then they wonder why people are turned off by it.
Maybe it is overblown. The first pundits declaring baseball "dying" were published in the 1920s. Then again, maybe the ship has taken on too much water and its really, truly sinking this time.

Re: Baseball
MLB- the entity- is in the food&beverage business. Like American Football is in the television business and Basketball has attached itself to fast fashion.
Foodstuffs never go out of style, and people are still filling parks from the majors to the low minors. But the growth (or the illusion of growth) isn't the same as being in the tv business, or as easily translatable internationally as sneaker sales. And the competition for cheap food and entertainment has displaced it totally. Then there is the taboo part of that no one talks about. Baseball started this supposed decline pretty much in line with the tightening of drunk driving laws. As the attitudes and habits about alcohol use changed, so did attitudes about baseball being "boring". Because while I don't think it's right or fair to say people were going just to get drunk; it was probably at one point a more socially acceptable thing to be slightly intoxicated at an afternoon game with friends then say, hang out in a bar, and then drive home buzzed then it would be today. I don't know how baseball counteracts that- much like I don't know how they counteract flagging family units when the basics of the game are very much passed down from father to son. How do you teach the game while keeping it the "same" to kids without fathers?
So maybe the die was cast when baseball kept tv at arms length while the NFL remodeled their whole game around it.
It also hasn't helped that the union and ownership have been in perpetual war (with very long stretches of detente) for the whole of its history. Ownership-Labor disputes have always been the impetus of the game's structure for good and ill and it has wilted along with every other business like it.

Re: Baseball
And as for the proposal itself, the knee-jerk traditionalist in me thinks it's as stupid and objectionable as countless have already stated.
But that may no longer be good enough and I want it to be a living thing not some boomer sentimental ornament (a whole topic unto itself). In that regard, I don't think it's radical enough to save the tradition. As proposed, it's a half-measure stunt and doesn't get to figuring out how to actually generate more offense and balance out the problems created by bigger and stronger players (by nature or bottle) and coaches/front offices deconstructing the game itself.

Re: Baseball
This is a rather cryptic response, but in my opinion this is happens when baseball is reduced to an entertainment event and not a process......

Anyway rejoice...^^.......

Alas, no joy in mudville for the process (as you say) has been disrupted and it's gonna take visionaries to hammer out how to rectify that; if at all possible.
Re: Baseball
Baseball remains wildly popular in Japan.
The phenomenon called Shohei Otani has made it even more popular.
[Hanshin Tigers fans].
It would be quite ironic if baseball died out in the US, yet remained popular in E Asia: Japan, Taiwan, Korea

Re: Baseball
Yeah funny how they keep trying to kill American MLB
I literally used to work on one side of Ranger Stadium and live on the other side of it. One night I was driving home and And I thought "I ought to go to the game tonight" Then "No I'll get someone from work to go with me tomorrow" Around 10 pm that night I heard a massive roar coming from the stadium. So I turned on the TV and found out that Nolan Ryan at age 47 had just pitched a no hitter. - True story. He actually pitched a second one that very same season as well.
Then there is the unassisted triple play in the 1920 World series The first grand slam in world series history was hit in that same game. People tend to believe that was the only unassisted triple play in world series history. However that was the only triple play in not only the World Series but is any post season in history.
Baseball is a sport where once in a very great while, when all the stars on the field and in the sky align perfection can be seen.Bill Wambsganss (top left, in white) completes his unassisted triple play in Game 5 of the 1920 World Series. This marks the only time any triple play has been executed in the postseason.
At the time of the last manned moon landing, more men had walked on the Moon than had ever pitched a perfect game in 112 years of Major League Baseball.
For The Love Of The Game | The Perfect Game
They really should leave the rules alone.
BTW It still stings - the face palm I did after I turned on my TV so many years ago on a lonely week night.

Shohei Ohtani is a phenomenon and is now his own character in the Fortnite video game.
Re: Baseball
with regards the move to Asia, the same thing happened to cricket.
now its mostly a secondary sport in the west (Australia excepted) because sport itself is mostly a secondary activity in the west.

Arlington was pretty chill. Arlington, at least at that time was the main "family" entertainment district of the Dallas Fort Worth area. Six flags was there plus a huge water park among other venues.NapLajoieOnSteroids wrote: ↑18 Mar 2025 06:11I've heard the fans in Arlington, at least at one time, were the friendliest in the sport.
For me lunch was great. As the was a massive number of up scale restaurants that were really expensive at night and on the weekends that were dirt cheap at lunch time.

From the tv perspective, the Tokyo Dome reminds me of the previous generation of multisport arenas that just happen to host baseball.
Like the old astrodome in Houston.
Here, it's down to the now iconic Dodgers Stadium (which is open-air) which really benefits from the LA weather and palm trees in the background.
