In a report to be published on Monday, and provided in advance to The New York Times, Kaspersky Lab says that the scope of this attack on more than 100 banks and other financial institutions in 30 nations could make it one of the largest bank thefts ever — and one conducted without the usual signs of robbery.
The Moscow-based firm says that because of nondisclosure agreements with the banks that were hit, it cannot name them. Officials at the White House and the F.B.I. have been briefed on the findings, but say that it will take time to confirm them and assess the losses.
Kaspersky Lab says it has seen evidence of $300 million in theft through clients, and believes the total could be triple that. But that projection is impossible to verify because the thefts were limited to $10 million a transaction, though some banks were hit several times. In many cases the hauls were more modest, presumably to avoid setting off alarms.
The majority of the targets were in Russia, but many were in Japan, the United States and Europe.

All hail the white collar criminal? No one wants to be on the wrong side of a thief, but having the action happen behind a screen and not in a bank with weapons and potential hostages is better for everyone.
On the other hand, talk about destabilizing the industry. How many more people will be tempted to try to pull this now that they don't have to point a weapon in someone's face and ask for money?

Prosecutors from the Organized Crime Division (DIICOT) working closely with officers from the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) have broken up a criminal ring coordinated by two Israeli citizens. The criminals had planned to break into the data systems of Romanian banks in order to gain control of transactions and accounts. Giora Iahr and Avraham Oren Azouri were taken into custody last week.

Attacking banks to steal billions is just the current gold rush. At some point, electronic transactions are going to break down and be finished once and for all.

nonsense - piracy doesnt stop international shipping and highwaymen dont stop road transport.
the internet will be made safer for commerce and the wild west of free and open internet will come to an end.
this is garunteed - the difference will be as stark as the change from horses going where they like to licensed cars on official highways with random body cavity inspection from police.

It is guaranteed that inherently you cannot be 100% certain that Internet security is a contradiction in terms. It is all a matter of how much effect someone wants to put into defeating security. And the amount of that effort needed has consistently been less and less.noddy wrote:nonsense - piracy doesnt stop international shipping and highwaymen dont stop road transport.

Re: Modern Crime
that is while general porpoise computing with full access to all aspects of the operating system is the norm, which in car terms is build your own car, no licenses, no rules, unleashed on the highway and people still using horses and making their own roads, highwayman lurking in the bushes.
apple and android are not like that, they are strictly controlled walled gardens which only have sandboxed subsets of the operating system available to the average coder.
already their are many things which are only accessable through an official android/apple application and dont work on the generic cowboy internet and its not hard to imagine how this could pan out over decades.
we will shortly end up with official protocols from official vendors and while bandits and crooks will exist (we stil get carjackings) , they will be tamed back to within limits tolerable by commerce and government.
